Music lovers worldwide make the pilgrimage to the Jazz and Heritage Festival (Jazz Fest), which takes place the last weekend of April and the first weekend of May each year and combines a few out-of-town headliners with the cream of the local crop. Spring and fall are the prime festival seasons (and the best times of year to be outside in general). If you've got a hankering to pay us a visit, but you're not sure when is the best time, knowing your festival options can make the choice easier - or harder, but in a good way. We have more festivals in south Louisiana than there are days of the year. On this tour, we’ll make our way from the birthplace of jazz to the definitive strip of music clubs in New Orleans today. You can usually find them on weekend daytimes at Royal and St. Here is a video of one of our greatest street music ambassadors, Doreen Ketchens, who has been playing with her family in the French Quarter since 1987. We encounter and interact with street music performers on most of our tours. Many are also selling CDs if you want to bring the memory home with you.Īdditionally, the Crescent City Farmer's Market offers free, live music 4 days a week, with the market taking place on Wednesdays at the French Market in the French Quarter.Ī daytime tour of the French Quarter is also a great way to encounter some street music alongside some history and sightseeing, and we offer several name-your-own-price French Quarter tours per day. While some of these bars have covers, many just have a one-drink minimum, especially on weeknights.Ī note on budgeting: tipping is a big part of music culture in New Orleans, and often audience tips constitute most or all of a band's compensation for their time, especially if there's no cover.įor a self-guided tour of street music, try starting in Jackson Square and then walking up Royal Street toward Canal besides the music, you'll find plenty of cafes, shops, and restaurants along the way.īear in mind that most street musicians treat what they do as a career, but are not compensated by the city, they receive only what passerbys leave for them.įor this reason, it's worth thinking of street music as an affordable option rather than a free one, especially if you want to take photos or videos of the performers. Many Frenchmen Street venues serve food in addition to drinks and music, so it can be a destination for dinner as well as nightlife - and these particular venues are often friendly to an under-21 crowd until 9 or 10 in the evening. Frenchmen Street, located in the Marigny neighborhood, has the highest concentration of local-flavored music in town.Ĭoncentrated into a three-block strip just outside the French Quarter, Frenchmen Street is lively every night of the week, picking up steam as early as mid-afternoon on weekends, and has no mandatory closing times.īecause it offers so many choices in a compact space, it's easy to go to Frenchmen Street without a plan and make spontaneous choices about where to go based on what you hear. In 1324, when the wealthy Irish widow Lady Alice Kyteler was tried for sorcery and heresy, investigators reported that in searching Kyteler’s house, they found “a pipe of ointment, wherewith she greased a staffe, upon which she ambled and galloped through thicke and thin." 1440.īroomsticks were also thought to be the perfect vehicles for the special ointments and salves that witches brewed up to give themselves the ability to fly, among other depraved activities. Illustrations of witches on broomsticks, c. This “broomstick dance,” she writes, became confused with common accounts of witches flying through the night on their way to orgies and other illicit meetings. WATCH: Ancient Mysteries: Dark History of Witches on HISTORY Vault Flying Witches Linked to Pagan Ritual?Īnthropologist Robin Skelton suggests the association between witches and brooms may have roots in a pagan fertility ritual, in which rural farmers would leap and dance astride poles, pitchforks or brooms in the light of the full moon to encourage the growth of their crops. Both wear head scarves that identify them as Waldensians, members of a Christian sect founded in the 12th century who were branded as heretics by the Catholic Church, partly because they allowed women to become priests. In the two drawings, one woman soars through the air on a broom the other flies aboard a plain white stick. The earliest known image of witches on brooms dates to 1451, when two illustrations appeared in the French poet Martin Le Franc’s manuscript Le Champion des Dames (The Defender of Ladies). READ MORE: 8 of Halloween's Most Hair-Raising Folk Legendsīy the time of Edelin’s “confession,” the idea of witches riding around on broomsticks was already well established. His confession came under torture, and he eventually repented, but was still imprisoned for life. He was arrested in 1453 and tried for witchcraft after publicly criticizing the church’s warnings about witches. Edelin was a priest from Saint-Germain-en-Laye, near Paris. From the beginning, brooms and besoms were associated primarily with women, and this ubiquitous household object became a powerful symbol of female domesticity.ĭespite this, the first witch to confess to riding a broom or besom was a man: Guillaume Edelin. It gradually replaced the Old English word besom, though both terms appear to have been used until at least the 18th century. The word broom comes from the actual plant, or shrub, that was used to make many early sweeping devices. Bryan Lowder writes, this household task even shows up in the New Testament, which dates to the first and second centuries A.D. It’s not clear exactly when the broom itself was first invented, but the act of sweeping goes back to ancient times, when people likely used bunches of thin sticks, reeds and other natural fibers to sweep aside dust or ash from a fire or hearth. But the actual history behind how witches came to be associated with such an everyday household object is anything but dull. Recorded by the band direct to 8-track tape in a basement behind a cemetery, these nine timeless teenage anthems and jukebox rippers tackle love (“Got Me High”), lust (“Tell Your Boyfriend”), and drugs (“Here He Come”) with a counterculture sneer and trickster’s wink. And in case you are wondering, liquid cooling contains no visible liquid. Liquid cooling is not entirely new, other big brands like Samsung have been using liquid cooling on their device. Infinix also took a step to address the overheating complained by fans by adding liquid cooling system to the device. Infinix Note 3 comes with 13 MP back camera with dual LED flash and a 5 MP front camera with soft flash. Another highlight of the Note 3 is that it runs XOS – an Infinix exclusive custom user interface that is based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. You can sit back and watch them fight Sith on their own, conserving your energy or jump in and assist. You get to fight alongside other Jedi in mass pitched battles and the AI teammates are genuinely useful. It adds greatly to the atmosphere, as does another development. Classic Star Wars tunes wash over you as you take on reborn dark Jedi throughout the game. The graphics are very similar to Jedi Outcast, but the sound here is scorchingly good. That's an interesting choice to consider on each tier of missions. Why would you bother doing five missions per tier when you don't have to you might wonder? Well each mission progresses your force skill tree by one notch so you can choose to progress slower through the game but more powerfully. Again though a better aspect to the game than Jedi Outcast and one that certainly adds more fun. It adds to gameplay but feels like a missed opportunity. The Speeder bike section handles poorly and is more of a chore, and the sections of Tautaun use and shooting tie fighters are small and over too quickly and easily. Unfortunately it isn't done to the best of possibilities. This is a great idea for mixing up the game play. Some missions require you to ride a speeder bike or a Tauntaun on Hoth, some to fight alongside Chewbacca or shoot Tie fighters in space. These missions therefore allow a variety of gameplay options. It's an interesting take on a way to progress through a game and indeed some missions are more fun than others so you can leave out ones you don't like. Go through this process three times to get to the final boss fight. You select four out of five available missions to play in any order and then you complete a 'boss' level to progress to the next tier of five missions. The game also adds some variety by staging levels into three groups. Nevertheless we're off to a better start than Jedi Outcast. You choose to build on these with a simple skill tree, but its bit too simple because pretty much everyone is going to choose to use 'Heal' and then all the Dark Force powers. Nope, in Jedi Academy you are thrown into the game from the off with a Lightsaber and force powers to use. There's none of the scratching around trying to find exits or terribly pixelated tunnels and having only a blaster for five horrible levels before you get going. Overall I can't say I'm disappointed with this game, I'm just not as excited to move its sequel up any higher in my priority list.Ģ8h PlayedThe follow up to Jedi Outcast does away with some of the problems of that game. This is one thing I can't wave off as a product of the game's age- games like Halo and Morrowind were able to present their stories in truly intriguing and explosive ways, so Jedi Academy gets no leniency from me. In addition to this, having a lightsaber means you have very little incentive to ever try one of the numerous blasters and other weapons the game gives you access to- why would I use anything other than the lightsaber? As a final note, while the story does seem interesting as an elevator pitch, the execution is terribly bland and excruciatingly dull. However, it's hard to hold the game up to standards set by games over a decade after it. This game would have heavily benefitted from a more focused dueling system such as Metal Gear Rising or even For Honor. I looked through the game's manual and while there was a fairly expansive list of different techniques, moves, and special attacks, none ever felt like they had any superior function to just wildly swinging and hoping I came out on top. But when you do come up against another lightsaber user, the outcome of such battles feels almost random. Tusken Raiders, Stormtroopers, and the other various enemies you come across fall to your blade like so many tufts of grass. By the very nature of what Star Wars makes out the lightsaber to be, anything other than another lightsaber user is pretty much defenseless against you. I find the base concept- kind of DOOM in Star Wars- to be very interesting, particularly cause who doesn't love playing as a customizable Jedi? The big problem for me, I think, is that playing as a Jedi in this game with a lightsaber is rather dull. That has more to do I think with my expectations going into it than the game's actual qualities. I have to be honest, this game was kind of underwhelming. |
